This is another great entry from the World of Almir series. The fact that the majority of the story deals with all new characters gives you a glimpse of how complex this world is, inside the author's head. I'm excited to read more from this author.
If you are looking for non stop physical action, you may be disappointed, until you find yourself glued to the pages, fascinated by the political intrigue aspect of the story.
I just got done reading it last night, and will go back to read book 1: The Depths.

Maiden of Secrets Paul Neslusan 9781517131111 Books Reviews

This book is good and fun to read if you're more into politics and trade within the fictitious fantasy genre. It is slow to start as it introduces the characters and its setting to the reader. It definitely picked up the pace as it reached the middle. It is easy to understand the setting as it explained in great detail. Definitely worth taking the time to read.
Do you like creepy cannibalistic elves that make the Keebler Elves look like Soylent Green rejects? Do you like psychotic, drunken, deranged dwarves who long for blood-thirsty battle? Do you like spies and secret societies?
If so, then this is the book for you!
More fast paced action piles on top of the history from Mr. Neslusan's first book, The Depths.
Recurring characters with new heroes and villains abound around every corner.
Mr. Neslusan continues to hone his writing craft with continuing character development, imaginative action scenes and added complexity to Solypse' politicial, magical, physical, economic and espionage dynamics.
The core plot of the story is original and leaves the reader questioning their ability to morally and ethically judge a perceived enemy from a blind vantage point.
Loved the depth of characters. Setup nicely for another chapter in Caelin's story. Definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy novels.
Good read. looking forward to the next one.
Very exciting and interesting story. Paul Neslusan did an excellent job on his second book in the seies. I'm looking forward to the third installment.
In the fictional underground city of Solypse, populated by humanoids like us, there lies a trade route known as the Path, that leads to the dwarf-inhabited city of Bruemarrar, and in the middle of the trader group is Caelin, a young woman offered a chance to become a diplomat of Solypse by one of the dwarven lords. And plans may be unfolding to unite Solypse in a treaty with the neighboring city of Phira.

Caelin is finding that not all is as it seems, what do the mysterious Ephirs (Phira’s inhabitants) have access to that is suddenly wanted by the Council? And apparently, a secret shadow group known as the Roosters (the Illuminati anyone?) controls the Council, and finding out about them can literally cost you your life. The Ephirs have access to Delfs, creatures used in a nefarious black market slave trade. Apparently there is profit to be had in the mining of the rare and prized clearstone. We’re talking major dirty dealings going on all around, being swept under the proverbial rug. And among them, a Maiden shall lead her people to freedom.

If you enjoyed The Depths, Maiden of Secrets is the second book in the Almir series. The main themes of this book are political intrigue and corruption and they can be kind of dark and foreboding at times, so definitely a work to be appreciated by readers who enjoy the clandestine more than knock down drag out action.
I couldn't wait to read this after finishing The Depths. Once again the author peices together an intricate puzzle of a story, leading up to a fantastic denouement. Looking forward to more from this author!
